What’s new in the Peppol network for 2020?

By 2020 there will be several changes that will affect the providers of the Peppol Access Point, such as B2Brouter, as well as the network itself.

On the 15th and 16th of October, the Peppol community organised a conference in Brussels to present the latest news and innovations that will take place on the network. These are brand name changes, as well as other more technical aspects. Aspects that affect certified access points. Those service providers that do not comply with the changes will not be able to send or receive electronic documents.

Peppol (Pan-European Public Procurement Online)

Peppol is an electronic format that allows the standardization of communication between European companies and any buyer of the public sector during the procurement process. Through the Peppol network, European companies can exchange electronic documents with the public administration. Furthermore, they can also do it between private companies.

The Peppol network and the format used (UBL) are progressively establishing themselves as the common standard for electronic communications at European level. This seems to be a worldwide phenomenon as well. Countries such as Australia and New Zealand are making the transition to electronic invoicing and have chosen Peppol as their standard.

Internationalization

As mentioned above, Peppol is evolving from a European network to a global network standard. This is why the infrastructure now named “Peppol (Pan-European Public Procurement Online)” will be adapted to the slogan: PEPPOL: “The future is open”.

Another aspect that will change will be the name of the Peppol Access Points. This is the name given to companies that are providers of Peppol services nowadays. From 2020, these organisations will be called “PEPPOL Service Providers”. Furthermore, these access points must be both certified and adapted to the new regulations in order to be able to continue their activity.

Technical innovations

Another required change will be that access points are able to exchange data in Peppol Bis Billing 3.0 format as well as using the AS4 communication protocol for the exchange of electronic commercial documents. During the first semester of 2019, B2Brouter obtained the certificate to interchange documents through the Peppol open network complying with these technical requirements.
